I love working on stories that get left behind in the race for the daily headlines — journalistic orphans. Often, the most worthwhile and convincing images tend to lurk within the hidden, oblique stories that fly just below the radar.
Dr. Sharadkumar Dicksheet, 76, is a Brooklyn-based doctor who provides free plastic surgery to children in India suffering from facial deformities. Confined to a wheelchair after a car accident paralyzed his right side, he has survived two bouts of throat cancer, surgery to remove his voice box, two heart attacks, and a triple bypass surgery that reduced his heart to only 17 percent capacity. Despite his personal medical history, he continues to heal others.

No Whisper No Sigh is an introspective photo essay built around the concept of silence—from the societal silence surrounding madness; to the political silence forced on citizens living under a dictatorship; to that most personal silence, the intense desire to express oneself and unburden the soul. Music composed specially by a Finnish collective.

Book of the Week: The Shipping Forecast
by Mark Power
In The Shipping Forecast, Mark Power documents the 31 seaways covered by the BBC's shipping forecast, which is broadcast four times daily on BBC Radio. The areas include Finisterre, off northern Portugal and western Spain; Biscay, off northern Spain and western France; the Irish Sea; and southeast Iceland. In these stark photos taken on and around the high seas, life itself appears to have lost its coordinates, movements are disjointed and frenetic, and people wander aimlessly, staring out toward blank horizons.
