Leaving the Ivory Tower
by Werner Bischof
Joining Magnum in 1949 and persuing stories concerning the human condition around the world, Werner Bischof was an important early defender of humanistic photojournalism.
Our Daily Bread was inspired by Erich Hartmann’s trip across the United States in 1954, when he first saw the vast Midwestern Grain Belt. As assignments took him around the world, Hartmann continued to document the human work involved in making “our daily bread,” from the clearing of land to the final product presented at the dinner table.
