What is important to my work is the individual picture. I photograph stories on assignment, and of course they have to be put together coherently. But what matters most is that each picture stands on its own, with its own place and feeling.
"China Transformations" is the theme of the 12th International Biennial of Photo-Related Art, which takes place in Houston on March 7 to 20.
"A Flipbook on China" celebrates 60 years of observing the changes in China, as documented in Magnum’s living archive. More information about the festival can be found on the FotoFest Web site.
Magna Brava presents the work of five of Magnum's female photographers. The global reach of their work has been extraordinary: Eve Arnold in China, Martine Franck on Tory Island off the Irish coast, Susan Meiselas in Central America, Inge Morath in New York, and Marilyn Silverstone in India, Tibet, and Pakistan. The best from each of these assignments appears in this book alongside specially chosen images from the artists' wider portfolios, presenting at least 40 major works that document events of global and local importance. Each portfolio is introduced by one of the other four photographers, providing an intimate view of the work by a longtime friend and colleague.
