TIRUCHI, India — A refugee child hides behind a curtain in a shelter.
Beginning in 1983, 200,000 Sri Lankans fled to India as a result of the civil
war between the Sinhalese (who dominated the government) and the Tamils (who wanted
independence). Tamils living in Sinhalese-majority areas were subjected to
extreme violence and forced to leave their homeland.
Book of the Week: Sleeping by the Mississippi
by Alec Soth
Evolving from a series of road trips along the Mississippi River, Alec Soth's Sleeping by the Mississippi captures America's
iconic yet often neglected "third coast." Sensuous in detail and raw in subject, the book elicits a
mood of loneliness, longing, and reverie.
