On Dec. 26, 2004, a deadly tsunami hit the Indian Ocean, causing widespread damage and loss of life, most drastically in Aceh province, Indonesia—the area closest to the epicenter of the undersea earthquake. At least 225,000 people were killed across 12 countries—200,000 in Indonesia alone. Efforts to rebuild infrastructure and industry are ongoing.
